As another championship comes to an end!
The innovative set of championships called International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships have been organized in every spring and autumn since May 2015 with the motto “Our love for swimming is our shared passion”, and the aim to popularize swimming to everyone of every age. The 10th Bronze International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championship was held in Marmaris on May 1st-5th, 2019.
Aquamasters’ principles are manifestly defined as follows: “Contributing the awareness on swimming, and promoting it as a very special sport that can be experienced by anyone at any age, introducing it with a love for the sea to as many people as possible.” With the support of our vision partners, sponsoring companies, institutions and all the participants, this year’s organization completed successfully.
The basic purpose of the International Aquamasters Swimming Championships is to contribute to the improvement of swimming in our country, and its basic value is “Fair Play”.
We would like to tell you in detail about the regrettable circumstance, absolutely in contradiction with Fair Play spirit, which took place on the last day of our last championship, at the final scene of the 1500 meters Open Water Course.
As is known, championships are held in various age categories.
Our young swimmer Seyfi Diker, born in 2006, participated our championship in the 11-13 years of age category in 1500 meters Open Water Swimming Championship, completed the course in the lead, and received his Golden Medal.
Tolga Öcal, who participated our championship in the 40-44 years of age category in 1500 meters Open Water Swimming Championship was immediately disqualified due to his violation of the articles 8 and 9 of championship’s regulations in his unsportsmanlike conduct. As the decision of the jury would alter the scores in general category and in 40-44 age category, it was recorded immediately as it took place.
Irina Bolshakova, World and Europe Masters Swimming Champion and our guest of honor, who participated our championship with her husband and her son, obviously has nothing to do with the regrettable case. She completed the course in the lead in women’s general category.
This unsportsmanlike conduct which contradicts the Fair Play spirit resulted in a new article in our regulations: Aqumasters Board of Directors declare that any swimmers involved in unsportsmanlike conducts of any sort would be excluded from the International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships for a year.
As another championship comes to an end, we would like to thank all our vision partners, supporters and participants for their contribution to our championships and to swimming in Turkey.
